Alexis
Alexis is the artist behind Symbiose, a project that has spent the last decade exploring the intersection of body art and naturism across France. Alexis treats the human form not as a blank canvas to be “erased,” but as an active collaborator in a dialogue. In this guest post, he reflects on his unique artistic process, the logistical reality of touring naturist resorts, and his commitment to portraying the human body in its most natural, undistorted state.
I first met Nick and Lins a few years ago at the Verdon Provence campsite. They were documenting their travels while I was there for a series of body-painting sessions. We were both too busy to collaborate then, but with another summer approaching, I’m looking forward to where our paths might cross next.

My Concept: Skin as a Canvas
Since 2015, I have taken my project, Symbiose, to over a dozen naturist campsites across France, including Euronat, La Genèse,L’Eglantière, and Héliomonde. While I’ve focused on France so far, I am now looking to expand the project internationally.
The workflow is straightforward. I set up a dedicated space with a massage table and examples of my work to explain the vision to potential participants. During the session, I work exclusively with markers rather than brushes, creating tribal or cubist designs that enhance rather than hide the skin.
The goal is to let the model’s personality and natural form remain the focus of the art. Once the painting is complete, we move into a natural setting for a photoshoot, where I handle the photography myself to ensure the final images stay true to the original artistic concept.
Participation is entirely voluntary and collaborative. Models can choose to remain anonymous and have final say over the designs and colors used. Nothing is imposed.

I have worked with hundreds of people of all ages and body types. The participant isn’t a prop; they are an active part of the process. A specific glance or posture can change the direction of the design entirely. The artwork evolves based on the person I am painting.
Join the project
I am currently processing thousands of photos from a three-week residency at Bélézy in the summer of 2025. My editing process is minimal: I adjust contrast and light, but I have a strict rule against distorting bodies or faces. In naturism, the beauty lies in the reality of the form, and my photos reflect that.
Once the Bélézy series is complete, I will begin scouting new locations for next summer. I prefer to change venues every year to keep the project moving.

I choose not to be paid by the campsites I visit. This independence allows me total artistic freedom, but it means the project is funded entirely by the community. Donations cover my equipment and travel expenses (train, food, etc.), while the resorts provide accommodation.
You can follow the project on my website and see more of my work on the supporter’s site Symbiose Soutiens (subscription via Ko-fi)
I release a new photoshoot every Monday morning as a thank you to those who support my work. If you’d like to participate, suggest a location, or support the project, feel free to get in touch.
