Australia has thousands of kilometres of coastline, and scattered along it are some seriously good nude beaches. It’s hard to pick favourites, but we’ll give it our best shot.
From Sydney’s harbour coves to Perth’s Indian Ocean waves, from Adelaide’s historic cliffs to the pristine shores of New South Wales, these five beaches each have their own character, their own crowd, and their own very good reasons for earning a spot on this list.
1. Cobblers Beach, Sydney NSW
Tucked inside Sydney Harbour National Park about 30 minutes from the city centre, Cobblers Beach is Sydney’s most popular nude beach, and it’s not hard to see why.
The beach itself is relatively small compared to others on this list, which means that on a warm day, when 200-plus people show up, things can get quite cosy. The atmosphere is fun, social, and genuinely welcoming. Regulars call it the best soul-healing place in Australia, and honestly, that makes a lot of sense to us.
What makes Cobblers special is the mix. Men, women, couples, families, all sharing the sand in a way that feels completely natural. The sheltered harbour location means calm, not too cold water, perfect for swimming on a warm day. And the harbour views looking out over the bay are spectacular. You completely forget that you’re in Australia’s largest city. If you’re visiting Sydney and only have time for one nude beach experience, make sure it’s this one.
Getting there: About 30 minutes to the north of Sydney. The beach is accessed via a walking trail in Sydney Harbour National Park.
2. Birdie Beach, Central Coast NSW
About 90 minutes north of Sydney, inside Munmorah State Conservation Area, lies Birdie Beach. It’s the Central Coast’s only official nude beach, and one of the most naturally beautiful on the entire east coast.
Four kilometres of spectacular scenery with blue water and pristine white sand. As the beach is in a protected area, there’s no development or noise or distractions. Just forest and coastline, and a wide open sky. At the northern end, natural rock pools offer calm, sheltered water away from the waves.
Even on weekends, Birdie rarely feels crowded. You get a genuine sense of solitude and space here that becomes harder and harder to find, even on Australia’s coast. If you’re after a place where being naked feels effortless and completely in tune with your surroundings, this is it.
Getting there: Located within Munmorah State Conservation Area on the Central Coast. Check National Parks NSW for current access details and any entry requirements.
3. Maslin Beach, Adelaide SA
Maslin Beach holds a special place in Australian naturist history: it was the country’s first official nude beach, established in February 1975. And over 50 years later, it’s still considered one of the best.
The beach runs for two kilometres of wide sand, backed by dramatic coloured sand cliffs that form a stunning natural amphitheatre. The layers of colour in those cliffs change with the light throughout the day. It’s the kind of scenery you don’t stop noticing, even after hours on the beach.
The water is crystal-clear, and the beach is wide enough that you never feel cramped. No construction in sight. No intrusion. Just the cliffs, the sand, and the sea. It was voted the 6th best beach in all of Australia, nude or otherwise, which tells you everything you should know about the setting.
Located just south of Adelaide centre, Maslin is an easy and very worthwhile half-day trip from the city.
Getting there: Approximately 40 minutes south of Adelaide city centre. There’s quite a lot of parking space. The nude section is at the southern end of the beach.
4. Swanbourne Beach, Perth WA
If accessibility is your priority, Swanbourne delivers. Located practically on Perth’s doorstep, it’s one of the most conveniently located nude beaches in the country. And one of the biggest.
Several kilometres of wide white sand, clean Indian Ocean water, and high dunes that provide natural shelter along the coastline. The scale here is impressive: even when the beach gets busy, there’s always room to find your own space and spread out.
A word of warning: the waves can be strong, so skinny dips are better suited to confident swimmers. Mornings are generally the best time to visit because the wind on Australia’s west coast tends to pick up in the afternoon. And this changes the experience significantly (read: Instead of a nice tan, you’ll be getting a good sandblast).
Swanbourne is a well-established and welcoming beach with a broad, mixed crowd. It’s the kind of place where you realise Perth residents know exactly how lucky they are.
Getting there: Swanbourne Beach is within easy reach of central Perth. The nude section sits between the flags, check local signage on arrival.
5. Samurai Beach, Port Stephens NSW
We saved the most adventurous for last. Samurai Beach is one of the very few nude beaches in the world where it’s totally fine to arrive with your 4WD vehicle. Right on the beach. Located north of Newcastle within Tomaree National Park, you access it by driving through sand dunes. Yes, you can technically walk there, but it’s a long way. Most people who make it here have made a real effort to do so, and that self-selection is part of what makes the place special.
The beach itself is wide and secluded. At the far end, there’s a campground accessible only via the beach itself, which means you’ll need a 4×4 camper to stay overnight. It’s not a designated nude campground, but the dress code is as relaxed as that of the beach.
Because getting to this beach is genuinely challenging, Samurai rarely gets crowded. Those who do make the effort tend to be people who appreciate remoteness and a bit of adventure. That’s the whole point, really.
If you’ve got the right vehicle and sense of adventure, Samurai Beach is unlike anything else on this list.
Getting there: Located within Tomaree National Park, north of Newcastle, NSW. A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended. Check National Parks NSW for current conditions before heading out.
